Pixies’ Black Francis to release 2nd Grand Duchy album, Catholics live record, box set

[tweetmeme]The Pixies have yet to record a new album since reuniting in 2004, but frontman Black Francis has been no stranger to the recording studio in those intervening years, and, in April, will release his latest full-length album: Let the People Speak, his second effort with wife Violet Clark as the indie/electropop duo Grand Duchy.

Additionally, Francis is prepping a Frank Black & The Catholics live set recorded March 24, 2001, in The Netherlands. Due out March 20, Live at Melkweg was recorded on the Dog in the Sand tour, and while a tracklist has yet to be released, it covers the Catholics’ catalog and features versions of Pixies classics “Mr. Grieves,” “Monkey Gone to Heaven” and “Where Is My Mind?”

According to Francis’ website, the live disc is a prelude to a “definitive” Frank Black & The Catholics six-disc box set to be released “later this year.”

As for Grand Duchy, the duo’s 15-track sophomore album is due out April 10 Sonic Unyon/Cooking Vinyl Records, and is preceded by the track “Silver Boys,” which Rolling Stone premiered last week (stream it here or download a free MP3 directly from the link below).

In announcing the album, Clark says, “My motto for this record was, ‘If (Grand Duchy debut) Petits Fours was missionary, Let the People Speak needs to be doggy style.’” Adds Black Francis: “Let the People Speak has more confidence. For Violet, the confidence of finding one’s voice; for me, the confidence to become submissive. This record was definitely more about slamming it in.”

Best New Releases – The Black Keys, Lovers, Olafur Arnalds, Great Aunt Ida, Mwahaha, Inspired and the Sleep, Rocket from The Tombs

Without question, the release that most ‘indie’ and alternative rock fans are talking about this week is the new album from The Black Keys. The duo is on quite a ride right now which always makes us worry a little bit. There is something about when a band gets too popular that really does detract [...]

We have a few very last-minute playlist additions today, including an almost-impossibly late entry for Album Of The Year consideration, The Black Keys’ El Camino.  At this time of year it’s pretty much all about figuring out the best songs/albums/shows of 2011, but those BKs have thrown a 10-gallon hat in the ring.  Other new additions include Lovers (Portand, OR), Mark Lanegan Band (Seattle, WA), Norse Horse (California), and The Twilight Sad (Kilsyth, Scotland).
Please mark your calendars and buy your tickets: BAGeL Radio Presents… Her Space Holiday at Bottom of the Hill along with Silver Swans and City Light on Saturday, December 16h, 2011.  When you hear a song by any of the three bands during the live show (Fridays, 9a.m. – 5p.m. Pacific Time) today, get in touch and you might win yourself a pair of free free a-yuh I said free tickets to the show. Moving Pictures: “Lonely Boy” by The Black Keys

From the credit where it’s due department, and maybe the stating the obvious department, too, Akron ex-pats The Black Keys sure do know how to promote their jams. The lead up to their new album, El Camino, due out December 6th on Nonesuch Records, started with a contest to win a beat-down minivan, complete with a fake commercial starring comedian, Bob Odenkirk. Now, just as the first single, “Lonely Boy,” is about to hit the airwaves, they’ve released a low-budget video featuring no more than a serious man displaying serious dance moves in an old office. As for the jam itself, “Lonely Boy,” delivers just as the band promised — A back to basics rehash of the smokin’ blues of their earlier days.

MP3: Apparat – Black Water

Berliner Apparat a.k.a Sachsa Ring has released a free download of Black Water from his forthcoming album The Devil’s Walk. Lush, delicate, and beautiful, this is my favorite song right now. One Soundclouder summed up the power of Black Water quite poetically: “This is something you might hear at the ending credits of your life”
