This week I was fortunate enough to attend the 10th San Francisco Music Tech Summit and am happy to report that the tenor of the music/tech discussion appears to have changed.  With each summit the speakers, panelists, and attendees seem less tied to the old music business model of selling shiny plastic discs (while ripping off the artists who created the art) while moving more towards a future of streaming media and subscription services.

Still, the RIAA continues doing hateful shit like pushing bad legislation, pressuring Google to stop doing what it does, maintaining misguided monopolistic middle-men like SoundExchange to ensure that most revenues get funneled to them and not to artists, and stomping on legitimate businesses they don’t like…but the tide is clearly turning against them.  It was the most encouraging music/tech conference I’ve been to yet — as you’ve read here many times before, the music industry is fine and dandy, it’s the paleolithic recorded music industry that’s in trouble.

There is a good write-up of SF MusicTech X over on Hypebot.
Next week is the Digital Media Forum East conference…if I can find a cheap flight to NYC, I’ll be there, too!

Best New Releases – Jan. 24th – Cloud Nothings, Porcelain Raft, The Big Pink, Big Deal, First Aid Kit, Chairlift, Nada Surf

There have been so many notable new releases that dropped in the past week that music lovers have plenty of great, new music to keep them busy, and which explains partly why we’re late with this post (this week’s releases will be posted soon, but first the really good stuff).  The quantity and quality of [...]

Best New Releases – Week of Jan. 31 – Imperial Teen, Leonard Cohen, Pacific UV, Hospitality, The Library Is On Fire, Night Beds

Most of the new releases for this week dropped on the last day of last month, making January a pretty rad month for new releases after a relatively slow start (which is typical right after the holidays), and a great way to kick-off the 2012 music calendar. In case you missed any of IRC’s Best [...]
